Editing Techniques

Way Down East- DW Griffith, Early Example of Parallel editing.

In this clip the pace is set by the editing as the action is happening as quick as they are showing. This creates the pace that the director would have intended as the rapid edits show the vital details for the clips whilst keeping the same pace that keep the audiences attention. This is also an example of continuity editing as the clips are related to what is intended as they are all in or around ice and a lake this relates to the other clips as they show a water fall and someone jumping over ice whilst they are flowing along the lake. This give an example of perception of space as two characters are far from each other yet they are in the same area.

Example of Parallel Editing in "The Silence of the Lambs"

This clip is an example of parallel editing as there are two scenes happening at the same time and the correspond with each other yet they are happening at different locations. The purpose for this could have been to create audience reaction and engage the viewer as when a character opens the door it is a different person to who the viewer is expecting which will make them engaged and they will continue to watch. To achieve this purpose the parallel editing technique which is used makes the purpose possible as they could show people getting in position but not show the front of the house and only show the inside of the house that is actually meant to be raided.

Rocky III Training montage

This montage clip manipulates time as it shows how much improvement is made over the time shown and with a montage it shows a large time scale into a short time scale as the elapsed time could be months or years but the montage is only a couple of minutes. This could have the purpose of allowing the audience to anticipate what could happen and how this training is helping with the outcome. Another way the audience would be intrigued in watching is they can see how he is training and how he is improving with trying over time. The montage will help with the purpose as this can show different ways that he is training whilst continuing with the pace of the film that is already set.

Team America  - spoof montage

This montages clip shows the improvement of a character whilst telling the audience what a montage is and how they are used which makes the audience remember that scene as it could have made them laugh whilst watching it. Like the Rocky training montage it shows the same character doing the same training routine but improving a small bit in every exercise but is ready at the end whilst keeping the montage short the actual training would have been time consuming whilst only a couple of minutes being in the film. The audience would have been intrigued in the footage as it was to be the build up for final battle as this would create anticipation for the audience for that particular scene.

Now You See Me 2 Card throw scene

This scene has many quick edits as the pace for this scene is important, this is because they are trying to get something out of a heavily guarded room. the edits that are important for this are slow motion and camera tilts. With the slow motion this allows the card, that holds an item that they are trying to retrieve, to be seen clearly by the audience. The purpose of the editing is to allow the audience to understand what is happening in the scene at this point as the card, that is the main prop, gets thrown to different people at quick pace as to keep the momentum of the scene. The edits make this possible and the scene has the pace that it had in the build up before the scene.
